In an episode titled “It’s a Dry Heat”, Chef Jose Andres touted solar-powered kitchen appliances and forced the chefs to cook without instructions, utilizing either a solar oven or stove.
The wind blew out the flame on the outdoor gas stoves used during the Elimination Challenge, thereby forcing Chef Phillip to plate his dish under the counter with a table cloth on top of his head. Needless to say, this did not embolden his +1000 Top Chef odds at BookMaker.eu.
Speaking of that number, he shares those odds on the BookMaker lederboard with Carl, Marjorie, Amar, Grayson, Jason Stratton, Isaac, Giselle, and
Chad.
Wesley is off that mark, at +1200, and Karen drags things into more playable, pliable terrain at +790. Jeremy is at +790 too, and Kwame inches ever closer with +720.
Wesley won the Quickfire and received immunity.
The challenge was to use your solar-powered appliance of choice to prep a desert dish in 30 minutes. Knives were drawn to determine who got stuck with the oven and who would use a stove. Wesley even got a gift of his stove from Chef Andres for the job he did.
Grayson got to complaining early on, when she introduced liquid into her dish and shattered the glass oven.
But the moment of the night belonged to Chef Phillip Frankland Lee, an LA-based egomaniac.
During the Quickfire, he served oysters, sans plates. He straight up got rocks from the surrounding area, wiped them off and plopped the oysters directly on top of them.
Judge Padma called Phillip’s dish “snot on a rock”, and things only went downhill from there.
The Elimination Challenge was played out on a golf course, with portable gas stoves plopped on those mobile food carts that usually serve beer and snacks.
Tom Colicchio oversaw the chefs get grouped into two teams, orange and blue, based on who cooked with the oven or stove in the Quickfire.
They were charged with coming up with a progressive four-course meal. Within the teams they had to pair up and choose which course to prepare.
A simmering (pun intended!) feud between Giselle and Angelina came to a head when they refused to work with each other.
Grayson showed off and boldly took Angelina, but only because their group chose a Latin themed meal, and Angelina would come in handy.
The carts were set up in between holes on the golf course with the orange and blue team that prepped the same course opposite each other. The judges went quickly from one to the other and worked their way up the golf course.
When all was said and done, the judges and guest chose the blue team as having the most pleasing courses. Grayson and Angelina had the “least favorite dish,” a second course ofavocado, chorizo, shrimp, and corn hash.
Tom summarized the judges’ critique: more acid was needed in the dish as a whole and then there was that dreaded problem with the corn. He did go at the shrimp as well for being over-everything’d – seasoned, cooked and marinated.
Grayson fought back about the corn, explaining that she chose to cook it because it wasn’t the proper consistency to use in its raw state.
The judges asked the ladies to decide if only one should go or both of them and the cat fighting began. Grayson let loose her anger about the corn technique and then pointed the finger at Angelina since she was to be the lead on the dish.
Angelina fought back and both ladies stood their ground, Angelina's +1200 odds looking to get even worse, if not disappear altogether. Tom told them that the decision was made based on what part of the dish was the worst. Yep, it was the corn.
Grayson left the area getting bleeped.
